Study reveals average penis size across US states and exposes who is exaggerating

Many have fears about being an adequate size to satisfy a sexual partner and can affect a person’s self-image. While these fears are unfounded, it does not prevent some men from exaggerating their sizes to their partners. Researchers have uncovered fascinating findings about penis size reporting across American states.

The survey exposes which regions boast the largest measurements and which populations exaggerate most frequently. Scientists from Bespoke Surgical conducted extensive research to separate fact from fiction in male anatomy claims. Their findings reveal dramatic variations between states and significant discrepancies between actual measurements and reported sizes.

Previous Research Establishes Baseline Measurements

A 2020 study published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy established the baselines for penis size of the survey. The research analyzed multiple previous studies involving over 15,500 men across various populations. Scientists determined that the average erect penis length ranges between 5.1 and 5.5 inches. In 2023, scientists from Bespoke Surgical conducted their own nationwide survey to determine the American population’s penis size.

The Bespoke Surgical Survey Methodology

The New York-based medical practice surveyed over 1,300 American men asking them two simple questions. Participants were asked specific questions about their penis measurements during full erection. The first question requested actual measurements while fully erect. The second asked what length participants typically tell potential partners or significant others.

This dual-question strategy allowed scientists to identify patterns of honesty versus exaggeration across different geographic regions. The company reassured that their scientific data was not designed to “shame any state or region” only to gain insight into penis size.

States with the Largest Reported Sizes

In the self-reported survey, various states recorded vastly different lengths. Alabama dominates the rankings with men reporting an average erect length of 7.44 inches. Louisiana follows closely behind at 7.15 inches, significantly exceeding national scientific averages. West Virginia residents claim exactly 7.00 inches on average, while Vermont reports 6.98 inches. Utah completes the top 5 with an average of 6.97 inches reported by male residents. These self-reported lengths recorded significantly exceed the national scientific averages meaning reports could have been exaggerated.

States with the Smallest Reported Sizes

Delaware residents report the smallest average measurements at 5.22 inches, which closely aligns with scientific averages. New Mexico follows with 5.36 inches, while Maryland residents report 5.50 inches on average. These 3 states demonstrate measurements consistent with established medical literature on average penis size. Georgia and Rhode Island round out the bottom 5 with 5.69 and 5.83 inches respectively. Interestingly, these lower-reporting states show greater alignment with peer-reviewed scientific studies on male anatomy measurements.

The Truth About Exaggeration Patterns

The national self-reported average reaches 6.41 inches, which exceeds the scientific average determined by the 2020 study. This substantial gap suggests widespread measurement inflation or systematic reporting bias across American populations. Regional variations show some states inflating measurements by over an inch compared to scientific baselines.

The discrepancy highlights challenges in obtaining accurate self-reported data on sensitive personal characteristics. Volunteer bias may also contribute, as men with larger measurements might participate more willingly in such surveys.

Louisiana Leads in Lies

Louisiana residents demonstrate the highest exaggeration rates when communicating with potential romantic partners. Men from the Pelican State claim an average of 8.07 inches when talking to dates or partners.

This represents a significant 0.92-inch inflation from their already-inflated self-reported measurements. The state shows the widest variance between actual measurements and claims made to others. This pattern suggests cultural or social factors influencing how Louisiana men present themselves in romantic contexts.

The survey results reveal that 26% of American men exaggerate their penis size to potential partners. These men inflate their measurements by an average of 0.98 inches when speaking with romantic interests. Surprisingly, 12% actually understate their measurements by approximately 1.03 inches on average. The majority, 62% of men, report their actual measurements honestly to potential partners. Delaware residents, despite having the smallest average measurements, show the highest individual exaggeration rates at 1.30 inches per person.

Understanding the Broader Implications

These fascinating findings show how varied men are in their perceptions of their penis size. It also demonstrates the relationships between self-perception, social expectations, and honest communication in intimate relationships. The substantial gap between scientific measurements and self-reported data suggests many men have the incorrect facts about normal penis sizes.

The variations from different states in the self-reporting survey also demonstrates cultural factors could influence reporting behaviors. Some states may not place significance on penis size while others may have anxiety about not being big enough. It is then relaxing to know that medical professionals emphasize that the vast majority of men fall within normal ranges regardless of regional variations. So, according to research, size actually does not matter and most have similar lengths.
