Gentle Dog Abandoned and Starved by Family Now Searching for a New Home

Meet Dutch, who was recently taken under the wing of Sandy Paws Rescue Inc., a dog rescue based in Massachusetts. This dog was abandoned by his previous family and is now in need of a new home. The Rescue doesn’t have brick-and-mortar shelter. Instead they rely on foster homes to host the strays, which provides them with a less stressful environment and individual attention before their adoption. Now Dutch is looking for a forever home to give him the love he deserves.

Dutch’s story

This senior Staffordshire bull terrier was abandoned by his family, the only one he had ever known. They had left him on the streets to starve when they no longer wanted him in their lives. Despite his trauma, Dutch is “mellow, affectionate, and the ultimate hangout buddy,” writes Sandy Paws Rescue Inc. on Wagtopia. “… Dutch is still a total sweetheart who just wants to be loved again.”

Positive traits and one “flaw”

Described as “a resilient soul with the kindest eyes and the softest heart,” Dutch is mild-mannered and quiet when left to his own devices. He is already crate-trained and housebroken. He also gets along with children, having grown up with kids with his former family, as well as other large dogs. Unfortunately, he is less tolerant of cats who he sees as “suspicious little aliens.”

Thinking of dog adoption?

Like with many other rescues, Dutch is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations. “We’ve made Dutch available for foster-to-adopt so you can have plenty of time together to ensure a fit before committing for the long term,” the rescue confirmed in a comment on their Facebook post. In another post, they confirm he still hadn’t found a home as of June 21st.

Shelters or foster homes?

Shelters are usually the first stop for lost stray dogs, but they aren’t ideal long-term. “Often shelters have a limited amount of space and either have to turn animals away or euthanize some if they get overpopulated,” says veterinarian Chyrle Bonk to the Dodo. Meanwhile, foster homes offer a quieter and more relaxing environment. There, animals can show their true personalities and get individualized care. This can help the rescuers better match the animal with an ideal forever home.

Sadly, Dutch is far from the only canine in need at Sandy Paws Rescue Inc. Ava has been long awaiting her future family. She is a five-year-old submissive Rottweiler who was rescued from a rural shelter. Her previous owner was a former cop, and he had neglected her in a garage where she was used for profit breeding. Ava is now happy in her foster home where she is sweet and gentle with the other dogs, chickens, and farm animals.

Dixie is an 11-month-old stray that had spent most of his life in foster care. This energetic Shepherd mix loves the outdoors, playing fetch, playing with other dogs, and interacting with people (although he can be too energetic around young children). Dixie is housebroken, crate-trained, walks on his leash, and does well in cars. The rescue is looking for an active family who’ll take him on long walks, hikes, or any kind of adventure.

People need dogs

“Dogs have a way of finding the people who need them,” said the late Thom Jones. “Filling an emptiness we didn’t even know we have.” Sandy Paws Rescue Inc. has this quote on their website, and many people who have adopted stray animals know it to be true. As much as their pets need homes, their new owners are the ones who truly win in the end.
